Essex, Vermont is situated in a vital location, just 6 miles from Burlington - Vermont’s largest city on the shores of Lake Champlain. Just 90 miles to the north, 6 million Canadians live and work in and around Montreal. And a short 3-hour drive on the Interstate highway system (I-89 and I-93) brings Essex residents to Boston.
Essex is located minutes from Interstate I-89, with best access via Exits 11, 12 and 15. View the current traffic on Vermont highways.
Air Travel
Burlington International Airport (BTV) is northern New England’s most convenient and welcoming airport, with walk-to parking and a new $15 million expansion. Business and leisure travelers alike appreciate BTV’s friendliness, excellent on-schedule record, and direct flights to many major cities on:
- Allegiant Air
- Delta
- JetBlue
- Porter Airlines
- U.S. Airways (American Airlines)
- United Airlines
Ferries
Crossing Lake Champlain on a ferry can shorten westward travel through New York while delivering dramatic lake and mountain views. The Lake Champlain Transportation Company operates ferries that leave from Charlotte, Burlington and South Hero for destinations in upstate New York. Once on the New York side, travelers quickly encounter Interstate 87 – aka the Adirondack Northway - a route that leads directly to New York City.
Rail - Freight & Passenger
Select commercial properties in Essex have access to active rail lines and sidings that enable them to haul freight. The major rail providers in northern Vermont are New England Central Railroad and Vermont Rail System.
For rail passengers, Amtrak’s Vermonter stops in Essex Junction twice per day. Discussions between the State of Vermont and the Province of Quebec are underway to reestablish passenger service from Essex Junction to Montreal.
